My latest essay at Scientific American, highlighting issues with the imminent arrival of artificial superintelligence, and some conversation with OpenAI's safety team co-lead Jan Leike
Just ordered that book audible, thanks for the prod. I'd heard about that back story to the Dune series but didn't realize there was a whole prequel trilogy on that very back story.
I read almost every piece of Dune literature that was published through about 2019 or so, but I have to say that while Frank Herbert's original six books are still firm in my mind, everything Brian and Kevin wrote is just a glaze in my mind. I don't think they did justice to what his concept of a Butlerian Jihad would look like.
yeah the reviews on Amazon are mixed at 4.4 but a lot of the early reviews offering faint praise. I got it on audio so I'll check it out and if it's tedious no loss.
How about we have a Butlerian Jihad instead?
It may well come to that. Perhaps we can learn from those fictional mistakes before we make them?
If we do, it won't be for lack of trying to mess everything up, for sure.
